When the Thunder was released in 2020, it was a feat of engineering–a scooter like none other before it. At some point, it seemed like there was nothing left for Minimotors to do with that concept; but then they released the Thunder II, and my, oh, my!

The Thunder is great. But if you’re an adrenaline junkie, we’d say save up that extra $800 and go for the supreme ruler of performance electric scooters–the Thunder II.

The original Thunder came with a 60V 2,060Wh – LG 3500 cells, which gave us a 45.2 mile range. The motors delivers a peak power of 5400 w, which is pretty impressive. And, the Thunder will travel as fast as 50.0 mph, and accelerates to 30.0 mph in 5 seconds.

On the other hand, the Thunder II comes in with an enormous 72 V, 2880 Wh battery with power-dense 21700 LG automotive-grade cells that delivers the longest mileage we’ve tested at 59.5 miles. The Thunder II can go as fast as 58.3 mph and it takes just 4.4 seconds to reach 30.0 mph. 

The Thunder II delivers peak power of 10 kwh. Even crazier is the double click throttle that unleashes the full rage of 10,000 watts of motor power boosting your ride to eye-tearing speeds. And let’s not forget that the Thunder II has the 3rd fastest hillclimb time thanks to the immense torque on the motors.

Kaabo Wolf King GT–World’s Fastest Production Electric Scooter

This is probably one of the most impressive scooters we’ve ever had the joy of testing. It’s not every day we get an electric scooter that breaks records the way the Wolf King GT does. 

For perspective, the Wolf King GT breaks the record for:

• Fastest production scooter in the World
• 2nd longest range ever tested
• Best high-speed stability of any electric scooter
• World’s best flat-proof pneumatic tires (you’ve never seen tires like these before)
• Best color display ever

The scooter has an amazing top speed of 61.0 mph–the best under $4,000, and only a few bespoke hand-built scooters like those from Rion allegedly go faster. The acceleration is smooth and progressive even in top performance, thanks to the sine wave controllers. 

The dual 2000 w motors propel the electric scooter to 30.0 mph in just 3.8 seconds–quite impressive. They are also responsible for the scooter’s amazing hill-crushing power–the second-fastest climb we’ve tested.

To bring the electric scooter to a stop, the Zoom hydraulic brakes with the thickest rotors on the planet are ready to fire with a stopping distance of 10.0 ft from 15.0 mph. And still, on reliability, the 2520 wh battery with 21700 LG cells is responsible for powering the scooter through 55.0 miles of range–a record distance for us (till the Thunder II came along).

It’s the most famous dual motor electric scooter under $1,000 (since dual motor electric scooters usually cost $1,600 or more), as well as the most famous ultralightweight dual motor scooter.

For your subscription, you get one of the most stylish scooters, with dual 250 W motors. The scooter reaches a decent top speed of 20 mph and can go as far as 9 miles on a single charge. And pound for pound, the Unagi is the best hill climber we have ever tested. The scooter also comes with almost zero maintenance thanks to the solid tires and regenerative braking. 

Lastly, the Unagi is the only portable electric scooter on the dual-motor list. The combined small folded footprint and the lightweight make it the dual motor scooter for commuters who need something more. Unagi is a strong brand that wants you to treat the scooter as your own, connect with your city, and enjoy your commute with the most hassle-free experience possible.

Varla Pegasus: Dual Suspension for the Budget-Conscious Rider

For our second and final affordable option on this list that has more of a performance bent, we have the Varla Pegasus.

What really sets this scooter apart from the fold is the dual spring suspension system that is not usually available for most electric scooters in its price class. The suspension is not the best and might require some tuning along the way, but it complements the dual solid, superwide tires to give riders an okay ride experience. This is your best bet if you’re looking for a cheap electric scooter for light off-roading. 

That aside, the Pegasus is not so much a speedster as it is a cruiser and is largely preferred for city riding. It comes equipped with dual 500W motors, with a peak power of 1600W that gives you a top speed of 25.0 mph and amazing hill climbing. The 48V 748.8 wh battery fitted on this electric scooter delivers a tested range of up to 18.2 miles. 

And for the increased power, you also get better braking with a dual braking system comprising a rear and front disk brake + regenerative brakes. The Pegasus’ long wheelbase and low center of gravity give it the best braking distance on our list at 9.2 ft. The Varla Pegasus also gives you one of the most stellar displays we have, ensuring you have a pulse on your riding stats for riding efficiency.

Apollo Ghost: Fastest Under $1,700 

The Apollo Ghost is one of Apollo’s best-selling unit for good reason. It’s not cast in stone that dual motors need to cost about an arm and a leg. Therefore, when a manufacturer like Apollo releases a more affordable alternative like the Ghost, best believe there will be some buzz.

To kick us off (or float us off) is the speed, which is unmatched in the scooter’s price class. The scooter hits top speeds of 38.4 mph, outdoing all other scooters by reputable brands under the $1,700 mark. What’s more, the Ghost comes with dedicated buttons for Single and Dual motor and Eco and Turbo to customize the ride experience.

The dual motors are each rated at 800w and each peak at 1000W (2000 w combined). This gives the scooter an acceleration time of 2.3 seconds to the 15.0 mph mark. It also gives it enough torque to scale our 200 ft, 10% hill gradient in 8.7 seconds. And to complement that power, the dual cable-operated disc brakes come into play, giving the scooter a decent stopping distance of 10.6 ft. 

The Ghost comes with a 52V 18.2 Ah lithium battery that powers the scooter through 22.3 miles of tested range. For comfort on your longer journeys, the flap on the rear deck comes in handy for ride ergonomics, while the rubber grips on the handlebars minimize the occurrence of friction on your palms.

Unfortunately, we can’t say that the scooter is as stable as more expensive scooters, especially at high speeds. The deck also has a large patch in the middle without grip tape, making for a slippery foot positioning. And lastly, the deck is a little slopey, forcing you to lean further back when braking hard. 

But all that aside, the Ghost is due for a 2022 upgrade, which we’re super stoked about. And here’s a snippet of what to expect from the new Ghost, 2022:

Vsett 10+: Honorable Mention

The Vsett 10+ is the self-proclaimed king of the mid-sized electric scooters. This light heavyweight electric scooter is a successor to the Zero 10X, whose popularity we didn’t think would be outdone, yet the Vsett 10 + is arguably as successful if not more.

If performance is important to you, this electric scooter won’t disappoint. It is equipped with high-performance dual motors, that churn out 2800 w of peak power. And thanks to this immense power, the scooter sprints from a dead stop to 15.0 mph in a record 1.9 seconds. It also reaches a top speed of 43.3 mph and achieves a 33.6 miles range, making it a scooter you can’t ignore.

The Vsett 10+ also stands out with its amazing build quality–the parts come together cohesively to give a well-put-together black and yellow electric scooter. From the top, we have a neat cockpit with well-laid-out buttons, a knowck-off EY3  display with a trigger throttle, and ergonomic brake levers on the ends of the swept-back handlebars. There’s also an NFC card reader for turning on the electric scooter.

Then there’s the wonderfully stiff stem that gives you a feeling that taunts you to push the limits. The deck is wide and roomy enough for various riding positions–the rear end forms a nice kickplate that adds to the usable space. The plastic fenders, embossed with a carbon fiber pattern, are also much better quality than we’ve seen, even at this price point.

The lighting profile is industry-leading, from the taillight to the turn signals and the ultra-bright front headlight. The scooter is the first in its class to come with a rear hydraulic spring shock that delivers incredible damping, though we wish it also had hydraulic damping at the front. The Vsett branded Zoom hydraulic disk brakes deliver exceptional stopping power.

NAMI BURN-E 2 Best Hand-Built, Exotic-Feel Scooter

The NAMI BURN-E 2 is a case of the understudy learning the ropes so well that they take the lead away from the show’s star.., in this case, the original BURN-E.

The BURN-E 2 is a cheaper release by NAMI, building on the predecessor’s success–it makes a credible alternative, and at $1,500 less. 

The BURN-E 2 is a hand-built electric scooter and the one sustaining records broken by its predecessor. Why opt for this electric scooter? Well, the hand-welded frame and carbon fiber stem make for quite the sturdy body. The scooter then comes equipped with Logan 2-piston hydraulic brakes that perform better than the Nutt brakes on the original.

The BURN-E 2 also comes with front and rear adjustable hydraulic suspension, where you can dial in the rebound damping from bouncy to stiff. You can also enjoy stability from the adjustable steering damper, which, coupled with the sturdy, welded tubular frame, are amazing for ride quality. Other than that, the TUOVTT tires deliver excellent track experiences.

The scooter allows you to independently control motor output to the dual 1500 w motors, which experienced riders will enjoy tinkering with. This would also allow you to customize your mode outside of the 5 dedicated ones. The motors will drive the scooter to 15.0 mph in an incredible 1.8 seconds and reach top speeds of 43.8 mph.

 You will have to forego a name-brand battery–the one on the electric scooter is a generic 2016 wh battery that delivers 49.1 miles of riding. You may also have to contend with a dead zone on the throttle and a display that’s not too bright. But that’s a small price for a scooter that over-delivers virtually on every other front.

Honorary Mention: Segway GT1–Single Motor Scooter with Dual Motor Performance

In actual sense, the GT1 is a dual motor scooter masquerading as a single motor scooter. From the beefy looks to the robust features and superior performance, this electric scooter deserves an honorary mention. 

If you saw the GT2 and thought, “I have to have it.” But at checkout, you realized you were $1,000 short; guess what? You can softly land on the GT1 and feel like you got the scooter you wanted all along. 

This 1400W motor scooter, with a peak power of 3000W, delivers stellar riding stats that even outdo many dual-motor scooters out there. The scooter accelerates from a dead stop to 15.0 mph in just 2.3 seconds and can reach top speeds of 34.5 mph. 

The large 1008 wh battery powers the scooter through 21.9 miles of tested range. And you get to enjoy the long rides on a deck as large as that of the GT2, with the same superior adjustable suspension and large beefy tires. 

The dual hydraulic disk brakes deliver the second-lowest stopping distance at 9.5 ft and come only second to the GT2s at 9.4 ft. The build quality is the same, as is the handling. And if you’re in the market for a dual motor scooter, the high-performing, single motor GT1 could be better than some of the options you’re considering, so give it some thought.

Apollo City Pro: Most Integrated Scooter, Plus a Very Reliable IP Rating

Apollo has to be one of the most feedback-oriented manufacturers we have, and it shows in each subsequent release. Since they engineered and released their first scooter in-house (talking about the Phantom, of course), it’s only gotten better with the release of the City and now the City Pro. The City Pro is built on Apollo’s 2.0 platform with proprietary hardware. It introduces dual 500w motors that give the scooter more power resulting in better hill climbing, faster acceleration, and a higher rider weight capacity than the City.

The City Pro has everything you need in a super clean, painstakingly custom-built scooter. The scooter puts across incredible attention to detail with inclusions like the more accommodative tall handlebars that are great for bigger riders; the wear-proof drum breaks that are less likely to lock up and work just as well in wet weather; the solid and easy-to-deploy kickstand and the super solid fenders.

Even more impressive is the set of tubeless 10.0 inch puncture-proof tires–an ESG tried and approved. We also really like that the feature-full app calculates the remaining range, something that we tested and found to work pretty well. The scooter also features full lights including turn signals whose buttons are conveniently placed for easy reach mid-ride. And talk about the highest IP rating we’ve tested on a scooter! Yes, it’s not encouraged to ride a scooter through extreme forms of wet weather, but at IP56, your City Pro is more protected than the average scooter.

EMOVE RoadRunner: Best Seated and Most Addicting

The EMOVE RoadRunner is easily one of the most addictive scooters you’ll ever get to ride. And no, it’s not an e-bike, but we see how you’d be confused.

First, this is a scooter with one of the best range in the market: 33.0 miles on a single charge. The large battery is rated at 48V 1252 wh and is removable. This means you can purchase an extra battery and carry it on a long journey to extend the range. And at 15.0 lbs, the extra battery weight will not entirely weigh you down.

The RoadRunner doesn’t stop there. To maximize the range efficiency, the scooter also comes with a seat option to add a sense of comfort to your 33.0 miles, 66.0 miles, or even 99.0 miles journey (anything past that might be a tad ridiculous). It’s not like seating in your favorite chair, but it beats the awkward standing on a prolonged ride. The journey is also comfortable thanks to the 14.5 inch tires that roll easily over obstacles and provide good handling, working with the front suspension for a bumpy-free ride.

The scooter also has a reliably high top speed of 35.4 mph. The acceleration is smooth, reaching 15.0 mph in just 3.9 seconds. The brakes match in efficiency, bringing your scooter from the 15.0 mph mark to a complete stop in 10.4 ft. The front 350 w and the rear 500 w motors also accommodate most people’s weight thanks to the 330 lbs weight capacity. And the height-adjustable handlebars allow you to adapt the most ideal riding posture.

If convenience is what you need from a dual motor electric scooter, then look no further than the EMOVE Roadrunner.

Kaabo Mantis V2: Honorable Mention

No dual motor scooter list would be complete without the Kaabo Mantis V2, so we had to include it though there are a number of better performing scooters around this price range. This scooter is a standard setter for the industry, and the V2 recently came out as a base version that exceeds the performance of the former, and more expensive, Pro model.

The Mantis is a well-rounded, excellent-value performer, but there are things that stand out for us. There’s the sine wave controllers that give the scooter amazingly smooth acceleration. The V2 also comes with a large LG or Samsung 1092 battery, which is responsible for the scooter’s 27.2 miles range. 

The scooter also delivers great ride quality thanks to the wobble free stem, the 10 inch x 3 inch tires, and the dual front and rear spring suspension. Riders also get to enjoy the unmatched braking of Zoom hydraulic brakes and the safety of a full lighting profile that includes turn signals. The added tire hugger fender also complements the IPX5 rating to ensure that both you and your scooter are protected when riding through puddles.
